Asthma affects a vast number of people worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 339 million are currently living with asthma! In the United States alone, over 25 million people, or 1 in 13 Americans, currently struggle with asthma, as estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). As such, it is one of the most significant chronic illnesses in the world today. At Trivita Clinic for Integrative Medicine, our team of medical experts does not take asthma lightly! We are committed to providing the highest quality of care for any patient who walks through our doors requiring asthma treatment.
While there is no definitive cause of asthma, researchers have found that a variety of factors could contribute to the development of asthma in a person, including genetics and severe viral infections during childhood. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (ACAAI), there are also several different types of asthma, including adult-onset asthma, allergic asthma, asthma-COPD overlap, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) asthma, non-allergic asthma, and occupational asthma. While the causes of the various types of asthma are not fully understood, there are numerous triggers that are known to cause an asthmatic reaction, including the following:
-Airborne irritants, such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or tobacco smoke
-Allergens, including animal dander, dust mites, mold, or pollen
-Cold weather or changes in weather conditions
-Certain food preservatives and medications
-Intense emotions, such as anxiety or stress
-Strong odors, including perfumes or cleaning solutions
-Upper and lower respiratory infections
Sadly, there is currently no known cure for asthma. With that being said, asthma is a highly treatable condition, and many people who are diagnosed with asthma are able to have nearly complete control over their symptoms. Our board-certified physicians at Trivita Clinic of Integrative Medicine are highly skilled and have broad expertise in the various types of asthma treatments available today. As such, we will strive to find the best asthma treatment option for you so that you, too, can experience significant control over your asthma symptoms!
There are several different treatment options for asthma, including such things as breathing exercises, short-term options for asthma flare-ups and attacks, long-term options for enduring management and control of asthma symptoms. Depending on the type of asthma you have, your age, and what commonly triggers asthmatic reactions for you, asthma treatment could involve any of the following options:
-Antileukotrienes or leukotriene modifiers
-Biologic therapy medications, including benralizumab, dupilumab, omalizumab, mepolizumab, and reslizumab injectables
-Immunotherapy, including allergy shots and sublingual tablets
-Inhaled long-acting beta2-agonists
-Methylxanthines, such as theophylline
-Short-acting inhaled beta2-agonists
Asthma medication can be taken orally, through inhalers, including metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) or dry powder inhalers (DPIs), nebulizers, or through injections. In addition to the medical treatment of asthma, your doctor may also prescribe various breathing exercises and encourage you to avoid known triggers and certain foods or drinks.
