What is the main cause of asthma?
While there is no definitive cause of asthma, researchers have found that a variety of factors could contribute to the development of asthma in a person, including genetics and severe viral infections during childhood. According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, & Immunology (ACAAI), there are also several different types of asthma, including adult-onset asthma, allergic asthma, asthma-COPD overlap, exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) asthma, non-allergic asthma, and occupational asthma. While the causes of the various types of asthma are not fully understood, there are numerous triggers that are known to cause an asthmatic reaction, including the following:
- Airborne irritants, such as air pollution, chemical fumes, or tobacco smoke
- Allergens, including animal dander, dust mites, mold, or pollen
- Cold weather or changes in weather conditions
- Certain food preservatives and medications
- Intense emotions, such as anxiety or stress
- Strong odors, including perfumes or cleaning solutions
- Upper and lower respiratory infections
Can asthma be cured?

With that being said, asthma is a highly treatable condition, and many people who are diagnosed with asthma are able to have nearly complete control over their symptoms. Depending on the type of asthma you have, your age, and what commonly triggers asthmatic reactions for you, asthma treatment could involve any of the following options:
- Antileukotrienes or leukotriene modifiers
- Biologic therapy medications, including benralizumab, dupilumab, omalizumab, mepolizumab, and reslizumab injectables
